Landslides in the gold mine
Madrid March 22, 2010 (OroyFinanzas) – The Ministry of Mineral Resources of Sierra Leone reported on Friday that at least 200 people were killed by a landslide in an illegal gold mine in the Bo district, some 180 kilometers from the capital, Freetown.
A Home Office spokesman said the dead were miners who were trapped by collapsing a trench about 12 meters and had dug themselves and that only about 20 people managed to escape.
Subsequently the Minister of Mineral Resources of the country, Alpha Kane, visited the scene of the alleged tragedy and denied the report.
“We reached the place along with the inspectors and military. There was no incident happened there, “Kane said, adding that he had gone to the mine because he had called the mayor of the local police.
Trying to clarify how the information came, the minister told the BBC that the police probably “would have heard the news on a local radio station Kiss 104 FM, which had spread the story.”
The gold mine belonging to the British company Cliff Gold. Those who had previously conducted a site inspection and the company spokesman said there had been no accident. What really happened then?
